Introduction to Network Planning and Network Design

Overview

You cannot conduct TDL operations without an OPTASK Link. One of the primary outputs of the network planning process is the OPTASK Link.

Without the OPTASK Link, you cannot determine:

  • Unit Addresses and Track Number block assignments
  • Assigned Network Design and the Initialization Data Sets (IDS) used by each participant
  • Link 22 initialization parameters
  • JREAP-C IP Addresses, Port Numbers, Link Designators, etc.
  • Voice and data communications frequencies
  • Crypto
  • Etc.

Another critical output is the Network Design Request. An experienced Network Designer can build a Link 16 network, but a novice may need a network planner to articulate Information Exchange Requirements (IERs), operational priorities, and restrictions using a specific lexicon. The process is further complicated by recent technological advancements including Enhanced Throughput, Network Enabled Weapons, Integrated Fire Control, CMN-4, and Link 16-in-Space. This one-day training course covers the Network Planning and Design processes from the Planner’s point of view and includes optional hands-on training.

Instructor Bio

Patrick Pierson, a retired USN JICO, is the Managing Director of NCS. Patrick has more than 40 years of operational and technical TDL experience, and has developed dozens of TDL training courses, which have been delivered to thousands of students. He has developed a number of TDL software applications, pioneering the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) functionality for Multi-TDL Network Planning, OPTASK Link, and Network Design. Some of the AI enabled applications include: the Advanced Link Planning System (ALPS), Complete OPTASK Link Tool (COLT), Operational Requirements and Capabilities Application (ORCA), and Complete Network Design and Operational Requirements System (CONDOR). In addition to supporting customers around the world, he also supports technical programs for the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
